Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between natural and engineered stone?

Natural stone — such as marble, granite, or limestone — is quarried directly from the earth. Each slab is completely unique, with its own colours, veining, texture, natural inclusions and imperfections. It’s strong, heat resistant, and naturally beautiful, but being porous means it usually needs to be sealed and maintained to prevent staining or etching.

Engineered stone is a man-made surface created from crushed natural minerals mixed with resins and pigments. It’s non-porous, durable, and highly consistent in colour and pattern. It doesn’t require sealing and is very low-maintenance, though it’s best to protect it from direct high heat.

Porcelain is ultra-tough, non-porous, and heat resistant, making it ideal for outdoor or high-use areas. Porcelain is manufactured in slim profiles (12-20mm) which can better suit some installations where weight and thickness is a consideration.

When it comes to choosing between natural, engineered stone or porcelain it often comes down to where you’re using the stone, how much maintenance you’d like to do, your budget and of course; what you love the look of.

Which stones are the most hardwearing?

When it comes to natural stone quartzite and granite are the most hardwearing, followed by marble and limestone.

Engineered stone is extremely durable and is a good choice for high traffic areas and requires minimal maintenance. Porcelain is also very durable and a great choice for outdoor areas.

What thicknesses are available for your stone surfaces?

Natural stone is typically cut in 20mm slabs.
Porcelain are either 12mm or 20mm depending on brand.
Engineered stone is manufactured in 20mm slabs.

Our skilled fabricators can manufacture your stone using mitres to give you the desired thickness beyond 20mm. 40mm is a popular choice for stone benchtops.

Do you offer cutouts for sinks or cooktops?

Yes, we can make sink or cooktop cut outs for your chosen brand and style. You can learn more about options for sink cut outs such as under mounts, recesses and farmers basins in our choosing your stone download.

What finishes do you offer for natural stone?

We are able to offer a variety of finishes for natural stone including polished, honed or leather finish. You can learn more about finishes in our choosing your stone download.

I’d like to have an overhang/ breakfast bar on my island bench, anything I need to consider?

Overhang and seating is a great, functional addition to your benchtop. If the overhang is over 300mm you will need to use a substrate or additional support. We can discuss this with you as a part of your consultation and quote.

Do you help with colour and material selection?

Yes we can help guide you with your stone selections. We can provide advice on the pros and cons of stone types over the phone, or if you’d like to book a time to come into our Nerang factory we can show you samples and help you choose the right product for you. If you do visit us in person, feel free to bring along any samples of your cabinetry or flooring to help guide the decision making process.

Do you grain match the stone?

Yes, we can grain match your stone selections to provide a show stopping effect for your stone installation. We can discuss grain matching during the quoting and consultation process as this forms an important part of your slab selections and quantities.

I have purchased some natural stone slabs at a stone supplier, can you manufacture my stone slabs for me?

Yes, we work with all major stone suppliers across SE QLD. If you have already placed stone on hold at a supplier we will coordinate to collect your stone and bring it to our factory for manufacture and installation.

How do I clean and care for my stone benchtop?

The care and maintenance will depend on your stone of choice, we will provide you with care and maintenance advice for your stone, tailored to your chosen stone, upon installation of your benchtops.

Do I need to seal my stone surface?

You will only need to seal your stone if you choose to use a natural stone material like marble, granite, limestone or quartzite. We will provide you with advice on sealing upon installation of your benchtop. If you’re working with engineered stone or porcelain, you don’t need to worry about sealing.

Can I put hot pots or pans directly on the benchtop?

We always recommend using heat protectors and trivets, especially with engineered stone, which can be significantly damaged when hot surfaces such as pans and pots are placed directly on to the surface. .

What cleaning products should I avoid?

The cleaning products you use depend on the type of stone you have had installed. We will provide you with advice on which cleaning products to use, or direct you to your chosen stone manufacturers cleaning instructions when we install your stone.

How can I remove stains or scratches?

It’s best to follow the stone manufacturers care instructions, we will provide you with these at the time of installation. If you have staining or scratching on your bench top it might be best to work with a stone restoration provider, we can recommend a stone restoration company in your area, just reach out to us.
